Pennsylvania lawmakers introduce healthcare AI bill | Health IT

A bipartisan group of Pennsylvania state lawmakers has introduced a bill that would regulate healthcare AI use in the state.

House Bill 1925 would require a human decision-maker when AI is involved in individualized patient assessments used by hospitals, clinicians or payers. Those organizations would also have to prove to state regulators how their AI minimizes bias and discrimination already prohibited by state law.

States have been increasingly considering healthcare AI laws since the U.S. Senate in July opted against a 10-year ban on state-level AI regulations.

“AI certainly has the ability to enhance all aspects of human life, including the healthcare space — but it should never replace the expertise or judgement of healthcare clinicians,” said state Rep. Greg Scott, D-Montgomery, in an Oct. 6 news release.

“As AI becomes a bigger part of our day-to-day lives, we must make sure it is not being overrelied on in our healthcare system,” stated state Rep. Joe Hogan, R-Bucks.

The bill was referred to the state House Communications and Technology Committee for consideration.
