Nashville-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center has begun a two-year project to identify and address care discontinuity in patients with obesity, backed by a $1 million grant from Eli Lilly and Co.

The project team plans to analyze electronic health records, survey patients and clinicians and use multi-agent artificial intelligence to determine why many patients stop treatment. The AI system will simulate inputs from physicians, nurses and dietitians to generate intervention strategies, which will be reviewed by expert and patient panels, according to a Sept. 17 news release.

In the project’s second year, researchers plan to pilot a mobile app in Vanderbilt’s obesity clinics, aimed at upping patient engagement by helping users interpret their health data, complete previsit tasks and communicate with care teams.
