Health systems across the U.S. are rapidly adopting AI to enhance patient care, streamline operations and reduce administrative burdens.
From using AI to generate annual savings to developing AI models for earlier intervention, health systems are finding innovative ways to integrate the technology into everyday workflows. Here’s a look at how three health systems are leveraging AI to transform their operations and patient care, as reported by Becker’s since Aug. 29.
Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health has deployed 230 AI applications across its hospitals, generating more than $100 million in annual savings through the use of AI and robotic process automation tools in multiple areas, CIO Daniel Barchi told Becker’s.
New York City-based Mount Sinai Health System has developed an AI model that helps determine which atrial fibrillation patients benefit from blood thinners to prevent stroke. Researchers said the AI tool accurately assessed stroke and bleeding risks at the individual level and recommended against anticoagulation in up to 50% of patients who would otherwise have received it under current guidelines.
New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health‘s venture arm, Northwell Holdings, partnered with Aegis Ventures to launch Ascertain, a platform for building agentic AI companies. Through Ascertain, Northwell developed AI agents that reduced discharge planning from 150 clicks to just six. In another use case, the health system cut the time required to generate prior authorizations for patient transfers to skilled nursing facilities from two hours to just six seconds.
