Geisinger residents explore AI: 3 things to know | Health IT

Resident physicians are experimenting with AI at Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger, with the health system keeping a close eye on how they’re using it, the American Medical Association reported.

Here are three takeaways from the Dec. 18 article:

1. Geisinger residents are employing AI to offload administrative tasks or as a “sounding board,” while “very few of them are using it to get a quick answer,” said Bruce Levy, MD, director of clinical informatics fellowships at Geisinger College of Health Sciences.

2. In the meantime, trainers are asking themselves important questions about the technology: “How might it impair our ability to ensure that our trainees are appropriately trained?” Dr. Levy said. “If this tool writes your notes for you, should we be sure that they know how to write a note before they’re allowed to use it? When is the appropriate time to introduce it in training? How much should they use it?”

3. The appropriate uses for AI are still being incorporated into graduate medical education curricula, with Dr. Levy noting: “Certain things you can do and certain things you shouldn’t do. Your car can go 100 miles an hour. Should you drive it 100 miles an hour? Probably not.”
