Mayo Clinic develops AI tools to predict severe childhood asthma | Health IT

Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic researchers have developed AI tools to help identify young children at highest risk for severe asthma and acute respiratory infections.

The tools use machine learning and natural language processing to analyze clinical data and apply two standard diagnostic checklists for asthma, according to a Sept. 23 news release from the health system. In a study of more than 22,000 children in Southeastern Minnesota, researchers identified a high-risk subgroup by age 3 that experienced pneumonia more than twice as often and influenza nearly three times as often as their peers.

The AI tools are part of Mayo Clinic’s precure strategic initiative, which aims to shift care from treatment to early prevention. The study was published Aug. 19 in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

Mayo Clinic said future work will focus on testing the tools in broader populations and combining them with biological data to refine treatment of asthma subtypes.
