New Orleans-based Ochsner Health has become the first provider in Louisiana to offer an artificial intelligence-powered technology for treating atrial fibrillation.

The system’s John Ochsner Heart and Vascular Institute is using software from Volta Medical to assist physicians during catheter ablation procedures, according to a Sept. 18 news release. The AI companion analyzes 3D heart maps in real time to help identify Afib drivers and guide treatment.

Ochsner operates the largest electrophysiology laboratory space in Louisiana and Mississippi and treats complex heart rhythm disorders with a multidisciplinary team. The health system said Volta Medical’s algorithm has shown high disease-free rates in clinical trials, particularly for patients with persistent atrial fibrillation who often require repeat procedures.

Afib affects more than 6.1 million Americans and is projected to impact 12.1 million by 2030.
