Technology is rapidly evolving in healthcare, and CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz, MD, is taking notice. During a recent meeting with Egg Harbor Township, N.J.-based AtlantiCare CEO Michael Charlton, Dr. Oz discussed digital transformation efforts and AI implementation.

The pair were joined by other healthcare and policy leaders to discuss a wide range of issues impacting health systems in what Mr. Charlton described as a working session in the spirit of co-creation.

“Health system leaders came prepared with real solutions, and there was strong alignment around the potential technology to unlock a more responsive, efficient and patient-centered system,” said Mr. Charlton. “We explored how the proposed $50 billion federal transformation fund could be used to accelerate AI-driven automation of prior authorizations, enable real-time data exchange and streamline care coordination.”

The participants agreed digital transformation would require a “common-sense approach” with less regulatory friction and more partnerships between CMS and providers, Mr. Charlton said. It will also require faster adoption of digital tools supporting bedside caregivers.

“When innovation is designed with the end-user in mind and supported by thoughtful policy, we can deliver better outcomes, reduce waste and transform the system at a pace that meets the moment,” said Mr. Charlton.

During his time at AtlantiCare, Dr. Oz toured multiple facilities including educational facilities and innovation center. The health system is committed to equity, innovation and community impact, which was on full display throughout the day. Mr. Charlton hopes the discussions will leave a lasting impact on federal healthcare decision-making for the future.

“The meeting wasn’t just about today’s issues – it was about building the healthcare system we all want to see tomorrow,” he said. “One that rewards value over volume, empowers frontline teams, reduces waste and places patients at the center. Dr. Oz brings a unique platform and perspective, and I believe he genuinely wants to transform – not just manage – American healthcare.”
