30% of medical visits to be virtual by 2026: Study | Health IT

About 30% of U.S. medical visits will be conducted by telehealth by 2026, according to a survey by health IT consulting firm ScienceSoft.

In 2023, 38.3% of mental health encounters were virtual, per the 2025 study, which was based on statistical insights, interviews with healthcare leaders and market data. Meanwhile, 78.6% of hospitals have telehealth capabilities.

Lack of government support for telehealth remains the biggest barrier, the report found, as Congress has yet to make permanent flexibilities first implemented during the pandemic. For providers, virtual care has added revenue possibilities using the same or fewer resources.
